The kitchen we started with#
Laminate uppers, faux-oak floors, and a builder-basic single-basin drop-in sink. A functional kitchen, not one anybody ever lingered in.
The design brief#
Modern Farmhouse, not the shiplap-everywhere version. Restrained, warm, textural. Rules:
- White shakers, black hardware. Two-tone hardware fights the palette; pick one metal and repeat.
- Warm oak floors, not gray. Gray-washed oak reads sterile in a farmhouse kitchen.
- Butcher block on the island, marble on the perimeter. Two counter materials give the room depth without needing more color.

The install order#
- 1Rip out laminate and old flooring
- 2Refinish the subfloor and lay wide-plank warm oak
- 3Prime and paint walls warm off-white
- 4Install cottage white shakers, black cup pulls on drawers, black round knobs on uppers
- 5Honed Carrara marble on the perimeter
- 6Butcher block on the island top
- 7Fireclay apron sink with a black bridge faucet
- 8Two open oak shelves above the sink, styled with white creamware
- 9Matte black dome pendants centered over the island
